Microfiction Day 284 – ‘Old Ground’

For years they had recreated their favourite photo at Durdle Door, the three of them pulling the same pose as the original from sixty years ago, their faces different but the same.

But now they were only two.

“We promised her that we would carry on the tradition. She wanted us to find someone like her.”

They asked a young woman in her teens to be in the photo, grinning towards a stranger who took their likeness.

They watched her leave. “Goodness she was so like Elsie.”

“A spitting image.”

The woman faded as she walked away. They didn’t notice.
