Microfiction Day 292 – ‘Sorrow’

“What’s that noise?”

“What noise?”

“Can’t you hear it?” He put his finger to his lips. “Shh.”

She listened. At first she thought it was next door’s TV. Then perhaps the fridge. She stood and went to the French doors, placed her palm on the cool glass for reasons unknown.

“I think it’s coming from outside.”

They slid the door open and stepped outside, bare feet on wet grass.

She sank to her knees without knowing why. He followed. They placed their ears to the ground at the same time.

“It’s the earth.”

His eyes widened. “It sounds like crying.”
