“Excuse me!”
“Sorry, didn’t see you there.”
“No, you never do.”
“Will you two stop arguing?”
“Shh, she’s coming!”
They fell silent as they watched her walk in the door of her 1920s house, kicking off her shoes and hanging up her keys. She had been surprised at work for her birthday, and she really, really hated surprises.
At least the cake had been good.
Walking into the kitchen without turning on any lights, she had the sudden feeling that she was being watched.
She snapped the lights on.
Nothing.
The ghosts watched her.
“When will she notice us?”
“Soon.”
