Microfiction Day 333 – ‘Urban Myth’

Out of the woods and onto the path
Avoid the witch with the wicked laugh

She remembered the rhyme from her childhood whenever she found herself alone in the woods. Despite never feeling even a tap on her shoulder among the trees she still held her breath, still felt her pulse quicken along with her steps.

She remembered the story of the two girls who entered the woods and were never seen again. An urban myth she reminded herself. It was never on the news. She would have remembered if it was.

A snapped twig. A creak of a laugh.
